(November 8, 2011) – Voters in the Borough and Township overwhelmingly approved the ballot measure to create a consolidated Princeton effective January 1, 2013. Results show the measure passing by 61.06% in the Borough (1,397 yes, 891 no) and 85.34% in the Township (3,870 yes, 665 no).
Under authority provided by New Jersey law, the governing bodies of Princeton Township and Princeton Borough created in 2010 a Joint Consolidation Study Commission to examine the feasibility and potential benefits of consolidating into a single municipality and sharing additional services. The Commission's final report and recommendations were issued in 2011.
The consolidation plan was developed by a ten-member Commission of Township and Borough representatives, with assistance from the Center for Governmental Research, a nonprofit management consulting organization with expertise in government management and municipal consolidation processes.
